Where are they now?

Issue two was produced while I travelled up and down the coast for a bit. Just like the song 'From St Kilda to Kings Cross'  this issue emanated from time pent living on my best friends couch in St.Kilda or from within terraces in both Newtown and Ultimo. I was broke mostly and was either unemployed or doing temporary government jobs like the Census. Luckily though I was able to lean on the help of fellow contributors, such as the late Caroline Milne who co-produced Out of Square zine, Stewie Sleazebag and Norm Nutcase.

The zine definitely took on a real hotchpotch of messy cut and paste bits aligned with a new emerging slightly different world - I mean we werent quite there yet but The Professor's ad on the last page, featured new found text (which I knew little about), giving us and readers a sniff of what was to come.

Defenestration (Melbourne) was a short lived project from what I've been told. If anyone has any idea what happened to these three let us know. They sure had a lot to say; smart, intelligible, somewhat precocious for their years, but hey they didn't lack spark! Pity their flame blew out so quickly.

The Moffs continued for some time ceasing in 1989, nearly one decade after David 'Smiley' Byrnes (bass) and Tom Kazas (guitar and vocals) formed the band while at Maroubra High School. Talks to this day continue about another reunion - in fact they already did one in 1994, ten years later in 2004, and another in 2011.

Original drummer Alan Hislop these days plays in The Escapees while keyboardist and harp player Nick Potts is involved with Echolyte who tour extensively, playing at the annual IronFest which was last held in Portland NSW. Andrew Byrnes played drums for the prolific Clouds throughout the 90s while Tom Kazas is a composer, producer, short film maker and post-utopian. You can listen to a wealth of The Moffs material on bandcamp.

Ed Kuepper continues to this very day a very prolific songwriter, He has been around since the early days of the punk wave with Australian act The Saints (soon to make a reunion under much controversy - Mark Arm from Mudhoney taking over Chris Bailey (RIP) on vocals), The Aints, The Laughing Clowns, Ed Keupper and the Yard Goes On (featured in issue 2) and of other solo names.

It was in 1987 that Paul Smith (RIP -the Yard's bassist) was living round the corner from me in Ultimo - Paul was a phenomenal musician and fan of the good stuff so it was very sad when his life was cut short a decade or so later. Ed at the time had the best band in Sydney with Rebecca Hancock (Paris Pink), Jim Bowman, Geoff Holmes (X and later Evil Rumours) and Mark Dawson (John Kennedy's Love Gone Wrong). Piglike Records came and went quite quickly. David Quinn upped and left Sydney sometime in the 90s for the UK. Not surprisingly, the first 7inch from the Southern Fried Kidneys is still highly sought after. For relief you can see this video of 'Graveyard' live in 1986 at the Palace Hotel, Darlinghurst' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJaxgAJsCmg

The Space Juniors were the funnest band from Sydney at the time. Listen to Juniorville 20  They morphed into Red Planet Rockets as well - Micky ended up going to NYC. Here's some footage from a reunion in 1999

Percy Owens was very prolific playing with Otis Redding and other jazz luminaries. Percy released an album called 'Jazz Across The Waves' before he passed away - a page was made in his memory on Facebook
